Neon Brown - "The Bringer of Light (feat. Kim Dawson & Mark Clifford)"

With his beautifully crafted new single “The Bringer of Light,” Denver’s Neon Brown demonstrates the breadth of his skills as not just a producer but as a songwriter.

The musically intoxicating track features fellow Denver resident Kim Dawson on vocals, Brown on production and back-up vocals, and the Bay Area’s Mark Clifford on the vibraphone. And taken all together, they deliver one of the year’s most stunning and also conceptually poignant tracks to date.

But before we get there, first soak in just how gorgeous Dawson and Brown's voices are on here, as well as Clifford’s accents on the vibes. They’re something, right? Well, they also serve to tell the story of the insidious loop of violence the world has come to normalize, as we continue to treat one another with unyielding contempt. All the while the sun keeps shining and giving us beautiful days.

This concept is brought to life in the track’s teaser video that was shot and edited by Chelsea Chorpenning and Neon Brown himself. It stars Marcellus Epps, who can be seen running through a dire, haunting landscape that inevitably depicts the world going dark.

“The Bringer of Light” is available now through all digital retailers and streaming platforms and is set to appear on Brown’s forthcoming LP of the same title, due out in 2021.

Neon Brown’s new instrumental project, L’appel du Vide, is a deep, sonically rich listen with a scope that goes well beyond its already-dope contents. More than just a beautifully produced collection of instrumentals, the album (whose title translates to “The Call of the Void”) plays out like a Greek tragedy that centers on what happened to America on that fateful November day in 2016.

With the 45th president’s shadow looming over the U.S., Brown began to contemplate some of his darkest thoughts and feelings. “You know when you're waiting for the train and you see it entering the station and get that thought of jumping in front of it?” he asked. “That's what ‘L’appel du Vide’ is. The call of the void.”

The thing is, while there’s a serious tonality to the affair, the project itself is not without its bright moments. Take the stunning standout track, “Love Is Not Lost,” for example. Built around earworm-y samples and clever nods to hip-hop legends, the instrumental takes on a life of its own without saying so much as a word. The same goes for other highlights like the beautiful “Pushin’ On” and insidious “Candy.”

The release of L’appel du Vide coincides with Brown’s other brand-new project, a limited-edition 7-inch record featuring collaborations with Vursatyl (of Lifesavas) and deejay Red C as well as Trailer Limon. The 20 track project is avaiable now through all DSPs, and can be redeemed for free download via Bandcamp by purchasing the 7-inch.

Maintain B/W The Light Goes Out (7” Available Now for Pre-Order)

After coming off the release of 'The Donner Party' with Deca, I’m pleased to kick off 2020 with a pair of musically and lyrically rich new tracks. They’re part of my limited edition 7-inch record, that finds me collaborating with some of my favorite artists.

On the A-Side we find “Maintain,” a hard-hitting but hopeful track featuring Vursatyl (of Lifesavas) and deejay Red C. Vurs delivers a strong message to listeners as Red C provides a head nodding scratch outro. The B-Side, “The Light Goes Out,” includes an appearance from rising San Fran artist Trailer Limon who weaves a gripping narrative about a young man on the brink of ending his life. The bluesy backdrop is courtesy of yours truly, and complements the tone of Limon’s stirring imagery.

The two tracks are available now through all digital retailers and streaming platforms, with vinyl pre-orders accessible exclusively through my Bandcamp page. Only 200 copies will be pressed, where each pre-order will be accompanied with an instant-grat download of my forthcoming instrumental album, ‘L’appel de Vide,’ as an added bonus. What up me Lords,

That’s right, Neon Brown Radio is back! A few years back when I was going strong with the show, I asked the distribution company about potential sponsorship and in return they shut down the entire operation due to my playing other people's music. In short, I’m a dumbass. But I’m back with a new episode which you can listen to on Soundcloud, Mixcloud, and on my site right here. Just click the NBR logo to listen.

If you’re new to NBR, here’s the rundown. It’s a radio show that showcases my record collection and mocks NPR. It’s not a mixtape, it’s not an hour of me showcasing my DJ skills. It’s genuinely good music I’ve found out in the field provided to warm your earholes. Not to say I don’t get a little loose at points but that’s not the agenda here. Hope you dig it.

Many thanks to Chelsea Chorpenning, Jacob Sanders, Desi Mulcahy, Mark Clifford, and Crystal Pascucci.

Enjoy!

A Funny Story About Facial Recognition | The Mandate

Hey there!

Facial recognition technology is a system that identifies an individual from a digital image or video frame, solely for the purpose of tracking, retrieving data, and advertising to that said individual. We Americans love our technologies so much that we let these encroachments drift pass us like two ships in the night.

Jake Sanders and I thought it was our duty to inform the public. Below you will find a video we created to educate you on the subject. Enjoy!

This past weekend, the legendary Billy Jam was in town for the Crush Walls Festival. The Crush Festival celebrates art, urban beautification, creativity, and culture by enriching the community through art.

I had the privilege and honor of being interviewed by Billy for his show, Put The Needle On The Record. As well, Billy played a handful of tunes from my upcoming album, L'appel Du Vide.

I had a great time and it's much appreciated. Thanks Billy!
