Creating a Cover Song: How to Make It Shine

KUATO, the boogie duo I'm one half of, recently released a 7" record featuring our cover of Bobby Caldwell's "You Belong to Me" from his third album, Carry On.

The album contains more than a few gems. Tracks like "Carry On" sampled by MED and songs such as "Words" showcase the signature Caldwell sound: sophisticated songwriting, soulful grooves, and that unmistakable sense of cool. "You Belong to Me," however, is one of the deeper cuts in his catalog.

I go through phases where I become obsessed with a particular artist or album and spend months dissecting it. I've done this many times with Bobby Caldwell. I'll listen for hours, studying his phrasing, melodies, and songwriting, trying to understand what makes his music feel so effortless and satisfying.

The last time I went down that rabbit hole, I developed a real appreciation for "You Belong to Me."

It's not necessarily a song I'd play in a DJ set, but the bones of it are incredibly strong. The groove has a subtle darkness to it, a kind of swagger that makes you want to walk into a room and catch eyes and maybe fists. The synth stabs are fantastic, the guitar work is classic Caldwell, and, of course, there's his voice.

Like anyone who's spent time listening to Bobby Caldwell, I was captivated by his singing. The man sounds like an angel who probably smokes a pack a day and hangs out in places your mother wouldn't approve of. On this particular track, there are vocal harmonies that almost veer into '80s metal territory. It caught me completely off guard and left me wanting more.

For years, I've had a complicated relationship with cover songs.

I often wondered: if a song is already great, why cover it at all? Most artists choose songs they genuinely love. So if the original already accomplishes what it set out to do, what's the point of recreating it?

Over time, I've realized the answer lies in identifying both the genius and the weakness of a song.

"You Belong to Me" has both.

The songwriting, melodies, and vocal performance are classic Caldwell and can stand alongside the work of any heavyweight in popular music. At the same time, I felt the production, instrumentation, and tempo prevented the song from reaching its full potential. That's just my opinion, of course, but having that perspective gave me room to create a version with a life of its own.

When we approached this cover, I knew I wanted to make a modern boogie record, something built for contemporary dance floors and worthy of being pressed onto a 7".

That meant emphasizing a few key ingredients: heavier drums, a stronger groove, and bubbling synth textures.

Listening to the original, I could hear those elements hiding beneath the surface. The idea was there, but I wanted to push it further.

The original sits comfortably around 105 BPM, which works beautifully as a laid-back groove. But if your goal is to get a room moving during peak hours, it needs a little more urgency. After experimenting with several tempos, I landed on 113 BPM.

Finding the right tempo is more important than many people realize. Songs don't magically work at every speed. You have to test them, live with them, and let your instincts guide you. I initially tried 114 BPM, but it felt slightly rushed. At 113, the groove breathed properly.

From there, I dove into instrumentation.

Caldwell's version features some wonderful synth choices and signature guitar work, so I used those ideas as inspiration while building an entirely new sonic palette. Despite having countless presets saved, I rarely rely on old sounds when writing new music. The process of discovery is too important.

There's a song in your head. Don't cheat it.

If a sound doesn't feel right in your gut, it isn't right. Slow down. Spend time searching. Shape sounds until they become exactly what the song needs.

This habit drives my bandmate crazy.

We'll spend a session building parts only to throw them away the next time we meet. But more often than not, that's where the magic happens. The willingness to start over can be the difference between something that's merely good and something people genuinely connect with.

That said, there's a balance to maintain.

Overwork a song and you can squeeze the life out of it. You need enough patience to perfect the groove and texture, but enough restraint to preserve the spontaneity.

For anyone just starting out, one of the most important things you can develop is your own groove.

How do you naturally hear and feel funk? How do the drums and bass interact in your head? What kind of pocket feels authentic to you?

Funk has endless variations. Sly Stone doesn't groove like James Brown. The masters all found their own rhythmic language and committed to it. Your job is to find yours.

Once we had the groove and instrumentation in place, it was time for vocals.

This can be one of the hardest parts of making records. Every week I record vocal ideas that never see the light of day because I know they're not quite right. For this project, I called my friend Tim Tucker.

Tim is an OG in the world of funk and boogie. He's been making this music for decades and has a rich, soulful voice that immediately brings warmth and authority to a track. I loved the idea of contrasting his tone with Caldwell's while still honoring the spirit of the original performance.

Finally, if you're going to do a cover, bring something new to it.

Add a section. Change the arrangement. Write a new melody. Take a risk.

For our version of "You Belong to Me," we introduced a new ending section with fresh lyrics and a new melodic idea. Once the music was in place, I told Tim to follow his instincts and see where the song wanted to go.

The result was one of my favorite moments on the record.

That's ultimately what makes a cover worth doing, not recreating what's already there, but discovering something new hidden inside the original.

Take a listen here.

7" ALERT - KUATO - YOU BELONG TO ME

KUATO – You Belong to Me ft. Tim Tucker

What up Funkee People!

My group, KUATO (Jake Sanders and I), just released a new 7” record. It’s a cover of Bobby Caldwell’s - You Belong to Me. The song features our homie Tim Tucker. A couple months back, we released a 7” with Tim on Star Creature. We can’t stop making music with this guy!

The original is a true sleeper. One of those tracks that gets skipped on the album, yet showcases the beautiful songwriting and musicality that only Caldwell could deliver. We wanted to honor that spirit while reimagining it as a modern boogie burner built for the dance floor.

Presales are now live. Secure your copy while you can—this release is strictly limited to 200 copies.

Orders begin shipping July 21st (or sooner, if possible).

STAR CREATURE | KUATO FT. TIM TUCKER - DJ'S DELIGHT b/w SHE'S A GO GETTER

Party Peeeeople!

My partner-in-crime Jake Sanders and I have just dropped a 7” with the fine folks at Star Creature under the moniker KUATO (named after the psychic mutant leader from Total Recall).

For this release, we took on two covers:

Side A – “DJ’s Delight”
Originally by Ingram out of Camden, this track has long been a go-to in my DJ sets—a truly magnificent jam. The only reason we felt we could do it justice is because of the 7” format itself. The structure of the original 7” version is a bit unconventional, which gave us some room to reinterpret it while keeping its spirit intact.

Side B – “She’s A Go Getter”
Originally by The Fatback Band from New York City. If you’re trying to make funk or boogie, studying The Fatback Band is essential. Working on this track genuinely changed how Jake and I approach the genre. These guys are masters.
Part of why we chose this one: I’ve always loved this song, but the original mix can feel a bit flat and doesn’t always sit well in a set. So we took it as a challenge to beef it up and give it some new life on the dancefloor.

We’re also honored to feature Tim Tucker on vocals for both sides. Tim’s been deep in the game since the early days of boogie, and his experience shows. He brings a rich, authentic funk pedigree, with a long history of standout work and involvement in several modern boogie projects.

If you’re looking for a new heater for your next DJ gig, this might be exactly what you need.

Who, or what, is PUTE? The Mystery Behind the Latest Album Produced by Neon Brown

Neon Brown's latest project with vinyl pre-sales available now (shipping mid August) and digital streaming on July 23, 2024, is shrouded in mystery. The focal point of this album isn't just Brown's signature heady production—it's also the bizarre collaborator, PUTE, whose real identity remains frustratingly just out of reach.

Who, or what, is PUTE? This question haunts the album, surrounding it with an unknown that makes it much more than a collection of tracks. Brown, known for his delightfully off-balance production, sets the stage for listeners as they enter this oddity. "PUTE is unlike anyone I've ever worked with," Brown admits. Honestly, I still don't fully understand who, or what, PUTE is."

It all began in 2019 with a simple Instagram DM. PUTE, unknown to Brown at the time, praised his distinctive style. Soon after, PUTE contributed a solid but oddly styled verse to Brown's project with NYC artist Deca, "The Donner Party." Afterward, sporadic emails and direct messages from PUTE kept the mystery alive. However, any project they may have done together at the time was stalled by PUTE's overzealous and erratic behavior in Brown's DMs.

Then the plot thickened in 2023 when Brown's TikTok account seemed to get hacked—there suddenly were unrelated posts, spammy emails, and generally inappropriate content. Brown suspected PUTE, leading to a renewed—and quite cautious—reconnection. What followed was unexpected: a link to a completed album with manipulated tracks with verses from PUTE and others, and all with a bizarre cover photo. But Brown's initial anger and thoughts of suing slowly led to a reluctant fascination. The album, a blend of his production and PUTE's unconventional contributions began to resonate with him.

The guest artists add essential layers to this cryptic project. Detroit's Guilty Simpson delivers his gravelly, all-swagger-no-filler vocals on "The Nothing” (available now as a single with the album pre-order), while NYC's J Scienide floats over "Blue Raspberry" with a smoke-like grace. Singers Daniel David (formerly Trailer Limon) and Lilli Hokama contribute haunting verses to a boom-bapped "There's No Turning Back," and Detroit's Quelle Chris completes "Rick Moranis" with his irreverently satirical sound. These collaborations enrich the album, with each artist navigating the mysterious terrain Brown originally shaped, but PUTE eventually assembled.

Brown's investigation into PUTE's identity revealed hints of something possibly non-human. Vocal samples in the record—ranging from Hal in "2001: A Space Odyssey" to Mark Zuckerberg's speech slips—suggest PUTE might be a collective or even an advanced piece of software. If that's the case, Brown knew this project could raise profound questions about AI's role in art, challenging traditional notions. Could PUTE be a new frontier in artistic collaboration? Either way, the only choice Brown felt he had was to release the record.

The PUTE album, produced by Neon Brown, is a strange, square-wheeled ride through the fusion of art and technology. It invites listeners to delve into the mystery of PUTE, urging them to piece together clues scattered throughout the album. Is PUTE a person, a collective, or AI? The answer remains evasive, but the trip through it all is compelling.

Presales for the PUTE vinyl LP are up and running on Brown's Bandcamp. The first single on the record, “The Nothing” featuring Guilty Simpson, is available now with any vinyl pre-sale order (shipping mid August). Digital streaming will be available July 23,2024. Take a listen now!

Neon Brown x Daniel David (Trailer Limon) - The Connection (Official Video)

Neon Brown x Daniel David - The Connection (Official Video)

Neon Brown x Daniel David - The Connection is live on the Youtubes!

In the sixth installment out of twelve projects for the year, I collaborated with the homie Daniel David, formally known as Trailer Limon. Dan has come out with magnificent pieces of music over the last decade. Whether it be songs with his partner Eric Boss in The Pendletons, producing for Zackey Force Funk, or collaborating with folks like Potato Head People, Dan has a knack for finding just the right melody and groove. A true Funkster. Very psyched to be working with him again.

The song “The Connection” focuses on the strong connection of love between people. The video focuses on the connection between love and art (music, 2d art, and dance) and how powerful that love can be. But interpret it how you’d like.

Boog Harris, the dancer in the video is phenomenal. I met him at one of my DJ gigs last year. The way this man moves is quite unique and I am honored that he would be in the video. We filmed the dance scenes at the B Boy Factory here in Denver. Big thank you to Alexandria Marcus and Ian Flaws for allowing us to use their beautiful space. If you're looking to learn dance here in Denver, that’s the spot!.

As well, we had some friends and fam come through and play characters in the vid. Big thank you to Ryan, Brenda, Ben, Mom, and Etta. Love ya’ll!

The video was directed by the very talented Chelsea Chorpenning and myself. I animated over some scenes as well, which is a new thing for me. It was cool to learn and I hope to do more.

Please take a minute to check out the video. Subscribe to my channel, and like and share the vid. Due to flushing out a project a month, there’s really no $ for promo so I am relying on the fans to help spread the word and get this music moving. Like it should be! I appreciate you all and everything you do for me and for music. Keep it moving!

“The Connection” will be available for purchase next Tuesday, April 26th on my Bandcamp. iamneonbrown.bandcamp.com

Enjoy!

Neon Brown | BAGELS | Limited Edition Cassette w/ Digital Download

My 4th album out of 12, which I will release each month for the next year, BAGELS is a sixteen-track macro album packed to the brim with vibrant, colorful psych vignettes that will leave you in a daze, full and contempt.

Pre-orders for the limited edition cassette of BAGELS are up and running on Bandcamp now. Click either image above or below to order yours now.

Dedicated to J Dilla, hence the title BAGELS, I pulled out all of my psych records and pondered what to do with them. Make a mix? Make beats? Do a live set?

I decided to make red-edits /cut-ups of his favorite samples and see where it takes me. After creating a few, I realized the music was in the same ilk as Dilla Donuts. I decided to make a tribute to J Dilla, Donuts, and my good friend Nate Watters (Sounds Supreme).

Nate was a brilliant DJ and environmentalist who ran his own clean energy PR company and did a lot of good for the world. He passed a little over half a year ago from Lyme. I was thinking a lot about him this past month and it came out in the music.

This album is dedicated to Nate. I initially focussed the album on Global Warming but thought it was too on the head and too dark, so I reworked it to be a much more loosely interpreted piece of work. The way I see it/hear it is holding onto nostalgia, which is interpreted by the radio samples, while living in complete utter chaos which, is the anxious cut-ups of the music and movement of the album. However, I'd like this album to mean and represent whatever the listener takes from it.

TRUCK NORTH X NEON BROWN - CRACKER CHRIST B/W GOD STRUCK

Salutations from the Metaverse!

Neon Brown's and Truck North's two new singles, “Cracker Christ” and “God God Struck” take you to church and to the gritty streets of Philly. Both tracks are available on Brown's Bandcamp and will be on all DSPs by the end of the month.

The two new singles feature Brown’s warm and inviting production. “Cracker Christ" has a more subtle, soulful, somber vibe, that takes you to alter while “God Struck” is an agitated, synth-driven lesson of survival of the fittest that leaves you stranded on a one-way street.

Truck had a few words to say about both tracks:

Cracker Christ

"This song is about trust. Trust in a divine being that me (we) as displaced black peoples were only introduced to during slavery. This introduction was used as a method to “civilize” the so-called savage and establish a pecking order. The concept of a white Jesus is absurd given his geographical origin and it was truly one of the most wicked forms of white supremacy. The song is about deciding to believe in a God who relates to the god within. Same powers, same parables but in a divine being who looks as I do. All while noting the issues that come with any organized religion."

God Struck

"This is about inner-city living and what separates those who ironically are most alike. Death, poverty, perseverance, drugs, and the hope of getting out somehow. Through all of it, we’re all in the same boat essentially."

Brown states, "these two tracks represent a very real and terrifying vicissitude. Although there are plenty of songs, books, and speeches to gain knowledge on the absurdity this Country has thrived off of, not much has taken place to change the situation. This is a narrative that must be pushed and talked about. I urge anyone who listens to these songs and relates to them, to speak on the subject, i.e. white people. Nothing will change unless we do."

Both singles are available for purchase on Neon Brown’s Bandcamp and will be on all DSPs by the end of the month. This is the beginning of Brown’s push to release a project a month for the next 12 months. Keep an eye out for the next one coming in December!
